Marijuana addiction treatment
At Mudita Cara we have treated hundreds of clients suffering with Marijuana addiction or better know as Marijuana Use Disorder. Even though Marijuana has recently been decriminalised, we speak to countless families seeking help for their loved ones after marijuana has caused grave mental health problems, psychosis and affected their quality of life.
Marijuana is one of the most widely used drugs in world. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 9% of people who use marijuana become dependent on or addicted, meaning they cannot stop using it even if it is having negative effects on health, finances, relationships, or career.
While marijuana addiction isn’t associated with overdose death like other drugs, it can have serious side effects. Here are five signs you may have a problem with marijuana.
You Lose Interest in Activities
Marijuana can negatively affect your motivation or decision making, and can cause the loss of interest in the social and recreational activities that you once enjoyed. If you’re losing interest in setting and achieving goals, this could be a sign that you are addicted to marijuana.
Your Relationships are Suffering
If you’re putting less effort into your friendships, family, or romantic relationships because of marijuana use, that is a sign of a use disorder. You may find yourself pulling away from people who disapprove of your using the drug, and you might choose the drug over their concern.
You Have Developed Withdrawal Symptoms
People who are dependent on marijuana may notice withdrawal symptoms whenever they stop using it. These symptoms can include:
Your Tolerance Increases
As marijuana users become dependent on the drug, their tolerance increases, meaning they need to use more in order to obtain the same effects. Tolerance is a sign of dependence, and one of several criteria for drug addiction.
You Are Unable to Stop
People who are dependent on or addicted to marijuana are unable to stop using it, even if they notice adverse effects, like difficulty meeting responsibilities. If you find that you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is time to seek help.
Marijuana addiction Effects
Some of the more immediate effects of smoking marijuana include a dry mouth, red eyes, increased heart rate, lowered concentration, weakened motor skills and the ‘munchies’ (insatiable hunger). At times fantasies, anxiety, panic attacks and paranoia have been reported by cannabis smokers. Psychosis, an episode in which someone becomes detached from reality is not uncommon and can be a scary experience for all concerned. It’s an ABSOLUTE myth that a person needs to be smoking cannabis for years before possibly becoming psychotic, There are known cases of first-time smokers who have had psychotic episodes and have to take medication to manage the psychosis, possibly for the rest of their life. Once a person has a psychotic episode then they are predisposed to repeating the same experience if they stop the medication or start taking any kind of street drug again such as amphetamines or cocaine!
